Nevada Residents Facing New Car Insurance Requirements

No one likes the fact that their car insurance rates will go up. The economy is doing quite badly right now and many people are struggling just to make ends meet. Most people worry about the cost of food and gas but they rarely think that they will have to worry about rising car insurance costs.

For most people, their monthly car insurance premiums are one of their lower bills to pay. This leads many people into a false sense of security.

Residents of the state of Nevada are angry about a new bill called Assembly Bill 120. The bill as proposed by Assemblyman William Horne of Las Vegas. His sponsorship of the bill has been a personal cause for him because of a car accident that he was involved in. Apparently, the driver who caused the car accident in the first place did have insurance but it was liability only insurance. The Assemblyman was not given enough compensation for his medical bills for his injuries under the driver’s car insurance policy.

This action gave him the idea to create a bill in which Nevada residents will now be required to carry twice as much liability car insurance coverage on their vehicles. This has not sat well with Nevada residents. Most people can expect to pay more than three hundred dollars extra per year because of the additional car insurance requirement.

The bill is getting mixed reactions from drivers. Some people say that by doubling the liability requirements in a bad economy that you are just setting the state up for more people becoming uninsured. The state of Nevada has been hit especially hard by the bad economy and people cannot afford the extra car insurance coverage. However, on the other hand, some people actually agree with the Assemblyman.

They feel like being involved in a car accident is tragic enough but not being fully compensated for your injuries and having to cover some of the bills seems very unfair. The bill would make it so that insurance companies no longer have to foot the bill when a person is underinsured which some say would help to steady car insurance premiums in the long run.

There needs to be a negotiation on both sides so that more people do not decide to stop paying their monthly car insurance premiums. In a bad economy, concessions need to be made in order to benefit the good of all people that are involved. However, people cannot overlook the fact that there are uninsured drivers out there and police officers and state politicians have not been able to find ways to deal with the problem. Fines do not work and many people refuse to be insured even though it is the right thing to do.

The bill will most likely pass but law makers on both sides are weary of the possible repercussions. If you suddenly force drivers to double the amount of liability coverage that they have, then they just might push back and go uninsured in protest. People hate being told what to do especially if they are already obeying the mandatory car insurance law that the state has. An additional two or three hundred dollars may not seem like a lot of money to state politicians but to many families it is an additional financial burden on them.

In today’s times, lawmakers need to walk a fine line between doing what is best for society and dong what is best for the wallets of their constituents. Without this happening, many Nevada residents could end up paying a heavy price for car insurance coverage.
