Find your auto insurance declaration page, a paper which provides information about your policy. Locate your coverage and determine your needs. For example: if you have an unreliable vehicle that often breaks down, a company like AAA may offer more affordable emergency roadside assistance than your current insurance provider. On the flipside side, if your vehicle doesn’t have a history of breakdowns then it may be advantageous to eliminate emergency roadside assistance completely. You may be satisfied with your current coverage but that doesn’t mean you should pay more for auto insurance.
Don’t over insure your vehicle. Reduce your coverage to the state’s mandatory liability insurance then determine if your vehicle needs more coverage. The more insurance coverage you purchase the more money insurance companies make from your policy. It may be a conflict of interest to add additional coverage based on their suggestions. You can always add additional coverage later.
Buy insurance direct from the insurance provider. I’m not a big fan of office visits to insurance agents. There seems to be no limit to what an insurance agent can charge to process a policy. I’ve seen customers pay hundreds of dollars and lose their insurance months later. Many are not informed they only paid for the auto insurance quote, proof of insurance paperwork and other agent services. When you buy auto insurance online from an insurance provider they act as their own agent, provide the quote and accept payments directly. Some insurance companies may even earn commission by providing instant rate comparisons for other insurance providers.
Consider removing comprehensive and collision coverage. Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your auto if it is damaged in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. Comprehensive covers damages to your auto caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism. This coverage can be very expensive and unnecessary depending on your driving record and zip code. If you have a good driving record, your state’s minimum limits of liability might be enough. You can increase your comprehensive and collision deductible or remove the coverage. Keep in mind, if you are not at fault for an accident, the other driver’s state mandatory liability insurance will cover your injuries and damages to your vehicle.
Get discounts, get a better rate. Auto insurance companies reward customers with a variety of discounts. You may qualify for a discount and earn a better rate if you’re a homeowner, student, senior or accident free. You can also get a lower premium if you have anti-lock brakes, a passive restraint system or an anti-theft device in your vehicle. You can also lower your auto insurance premiums with a multiple policy discount if you combine your car insurance with your home insurance.
