Facts Every Driver Should Know About Auto Insurance For Maine

Automobile insurance is not just a good idea. Auto insurance for Maine drivers is the law. Insurance in Maine can be very affordable compared to other states, but the fact is, you cannot afford to be without it.

Car insurance is required of everyone in Maine who operates a vehicle on any of its roadways. This law is designed to protect people from the extreme financial hardships that can arise from an automobile accident. Even the slightest accident can cost thousands of dollars worth of damage and every driver should be prepared.

There are two basic types of insurance that every driver should be aware of. These are known as liability insurance and comprehensive coverage. The first of these is the mandatory liability insurance coverage. Liability insurance covers damage and injuries to property and people in case of an accident.

This is the type of policy that is required of all motorists in Maine. All motorists in the state must carry a mandatory minimum liability insurance coverage. The current required amounts for bodily injury liability are set at $50,000 for injury or death per person up to $100,000 per accident.

In addition, property damage liability coverage of at least $25,000 is also required. This is often called a 50/100/25 policy. Every licensed driver must show proof of insurance coverage in order to register a vehicle.

In Maine, you must also carry an uninsured or under insured motorist bodily injury policy of no less than $50,000 per person or $100,000 per accident. A medical payments coverage in the amount of $1,000 is also required.

The second type of insurance, which is not required, is comprehensive insurance. This provides coverage for damage on your own vehicle primarily due to events such as theft or vandalism. It would also pay for expenses due to weather and single car collisions.

Most insurance companies will recommend that you purchase higher amounts of coverage that are above the legal limits. They are not necessarily just trying to sell you a more expensive policy. Cheap car insurance is not always the best car insurance. It is not hard to imagine how easily an accident could cause damage that could far exceed the minimum required amounts.

Fortunately, Maine has a lower average cost for insurance than most states. In fact, rates for most people are $300 to $400 less than the national average. By doing a little shopping around, every driver should be able to find an affordable policy that meets his needs.

One thing no one can afford, is to be without proper insurance. Not having auto insurance for Maine drivers can lead to harsh penalties. Another thing to consider the is the enormous expenses that can arise from an automobile accident. Required or not, auto insurance is a good idea.
