Are we seeing a drop in auto insurance rates?

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Jul 02, 2011

Auto insurance costs seem to be on the decline as it has been observed in the two sets of data that are generally used to track pricing. When you look at the recent trends in America auto insurance costs have actually dropped by about 6.75% between 2004 and 2008. There was a rise of around 3.4% during the same time as well.

There are two reliable sources of information such as Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NIAC) and both of them have reported that the cost has gone up and down during the same period – how could that be possible?

Cesar Diaz, CEO, auto insurance quote comparison site onlineautoinsurance.com states that when you look at the numbers given by NAIC and BLS you must also take into consideration the things that are being measured by each one of them.

When you make a proper observation, you will notice that both NAIC and BLS statistics are basically tracking two separate things. The difference between the two has certain implications that are crucial for consumers.

There is a difference between expenditure and price and it is important to understand the differentiation. For instance, the BLS takes the samples of driver profiles to generate its data, from all over the US. It has reported an increase of 3.4%. For this the quotes are taken from real companies for these profiles and the changes are then tracked down to check the prices over a period of time.

As these are only the samples, the motorists that they are theoretically insuring cannot change their financial protection levels, adjust deductibles, make auto insurance comparisons, or improve their driving records to find a good deal, whereas all of these things may help in reducing the auto insurance costs for the policyholders. But the BLS seems to have set the driver details and policies in stone while choosing the profiles. Adjustments in premiums are made only with regard to the upgrades in vehicles or changes in the pricing structures for insurers. The premiums generally go up when the insurers adjust their pricing and that happens when insurers suffer a lot of losses.

But the NAIC looks at the total premiums that are paid by these policyholders for liability, comprehensive, as well as collision coverage in every state. This is then divided by the number of insured drivers that have purchased the policies. So, this gives an entire view of the real expenditure that these policyholders have in each state.

Price Insurance before you Buy your Motorcycle

Posted by Admin \\ Jun 30, 2011

If you are a first-time motorcycle buyer then you are undoubtedly excited about the prospect. When you go into the motorcycle show room it will be easy to be tempted by the fanciest, fastest, most powerful models you can afford. There is a particular thrill associated with sport bikes, for instance, which may seem to be missing from more sedate varieties. Before you buy anything, though, particularly before you decide to splurge, you should be aware that you will not only be paying for the bike itself, but for the insurance too, even if you only have short term insurance – it can still be costly.

Motorcycle insurance can be expensive—very expensive. For inexperienced motorcyclists it is even more expensive, and the more powerful and flashy the bike you chose, the more it’s going to cost you. Accident rates are higher for motorcycles than for cars, and the incidence of serious injuries or death from the those accidents are four times greater. It is reasonable for an insurance company to suppose that the only reason you would buy a really fast bike is because you want to go really fast on it, and so they are bound to think it inevitable that you’re going to get in trouble eventually. Accordingly, you can expect to pay sky-high rates that represent the risk they are taking on in insuring you.

If you are new to motorcycles, especially if you are under 25, you should really think about buying an entry-level bike that doesn’t go any faster than you actually need it to. It will cost you less, both up front and in insurance. It will also be safer for you. If, after driving it for a few years, you wish to move up to something more powerful, you will then have the experience and hopefully clean driving record that will allow you to get reasonable bike insurance rates anyway.

Public auto insurance a better option than private insurance

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Jun 24, 2011

In the last four years, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has tried its best to convince British Columbians that the for-profit private auto insurance system would be a better bet when compared to the ICBC. However, that argument is far from the truth as there is overwhelming evidence to support the fact that when the government agencies do it right, then this choice between private and public insurance is really a no-brainer. Lindsay Olsan argued on behalf of Insurance Bureau of Canada, that there would actually be a dip in the auto insurance rates in BC. It is a well-known fact that Insurance Bureau of Canada protects private interests. But when you look at research conducted by some of the independent organizations that have taken a neutral stand, there is clear evidence that the IBC’s numbers simply don’t add up. Consumers’ Association of Canada has conducted studies to look into the various aspects of auto insurance rates. They have carried out these studies using the same vehicle and the same driver with the same driving record to see how the rates vary across the nation.

In each and every case, BC and the rest of the provinces that have the public insurance system are way ahead when compared to those with private insurance. For instance, CAC studies have shown that rates in the Maritimes could even go up by more than 45% than Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and in BC. In Ontario, the average rates were more than twice of what we pay. Although the IBC will want you to believe that the rates would go down due to the competition as the private insurance sector is strong, this is not true. Ultimately, these corporations are answerable to shareholders and not the British Columbians. Due to this patchwork in the private insurance system that is because of the inefficiencies, the insurance rates under this system will certainly be much higher than the ones that are under the ICBC.

It is certainly true that some of the drivers may get cheaper auto insurance rates in a place like Alberta. But those are rare instances as the driver is deemed as low-risk by these private insurance companies. The coverage that is offered is also much inferior when compared to the ICBC’s basic coverage that has set low caps for some of the benefits. The maximum benefit at Alberta is literally one-third of the basic package that ICBC offers. In a catastrophic accident, this can make all the difference.

Alert For Pacific Typhoon Season

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Jun 23, 2011

If you are traveling to East Asia or the West and Central Pacific area in the months of June through November, make sure you prepare for your trip with international insurance and all the details about this year’s typhoon season. While typhoons may occur in this area all year, the most active months are June to November. Travelers should protect themselves with travel and trip cancellation insurance, as well as monitor local weather reports.

Each year the Pacific region experiences around 31 typhoons. Some of these – around half – are potentially destructive and cause lasting damage. If you are traveling or living in this area, be prepared for possible typhoons.

Landslides and mudslides are common after a typhoon, as are high tides and flooding. You may find roads are blocked and transport non-existent. Many people find it difficult to leave the area immediately after a typhoon.

Use your travel insurance to help with any expenses brought about by the typhoon. The US Government will assist if the typhoon creates an emergency situation, but they will not pay for transport back to the US apart from in exceptional circumstances.

Favorite Dad Cars

Posted by Dustin Reed \\ Jun 23, 2011

.

This past Sunday was Father’s Day. In honor of all the dads out there, we thought it’d be fun to ask some of our Facebook fans about their dads’ favorite cars. Here are a few of our favorite responses:

  • “His ’68 Pontiac GTO. Tried to get it on Overhaulin to fix it up!”
  • ”1989 Firebird. Got to admit, it’s a pretty sweet ride.”
  • “The car I have in my barn! My late father’s 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix!!”
  • “His 69 GTO.”
  • “A very old Landcruiser we could remove the doors, etc., and hit the desert. He was original member of the Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern California. Back in the day!!”
  • “I believe Dad’s favorite car was his Lincoln Towncar.”
  • Check out the whole list

As you can see, dads seem to prefer the old cars they used to drive. Maybe it’s the memories associated with the car that made it special. After all, who can forget family road trips, car games, or those weird roadside attractions?

Whether pops has a Caddy or a beater, Sunday was a good time to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane, remember the good ole days, and thank our dads for being there through all the miles.

North Dakota Car Insurance

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Jun 23, 2011

North Dakota is considered to be part of the U.S region called the “Upper Plains.” Most of the state was included in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It was called the Dakota Territory at the time, which also consumed present-day South Dakota and parts of Montana and Wyoming. Until the later part of the 19th century, there were few settlers in this region because it was so inaccessible. Travel through the Black Hills, mountains and Badlands area was nearly impossible at that time. Once the railroads were extended through this region, more settlers arrived. In 1889, North Dakota, along with its neighboring South Dakota, was admitted to the Union. Shortly after that time, anti-corporate laws were enacted, making foreclosure on farm lands nearly impossible.

For this reason, many farmers have been attracted to this state, but it does require experienced farmers. The land is hard to cultivate and most months of the year are cold. Oil was discovered in the 1980s, making this a resourceful state. Most of North Dakota is wide-open area. The majority of the state’s population lives in the state’s two larger cities, Fargo and Bismarck. During the winter time, driving in the city can be treacherous with snow, ice and strong wind. The temperatures drop well below zero and stay there for days. Vehicles experience more damage and wear in such extreme temperatures. Another threat to vehicles in this state is careless drivers. Outside of the cities, wildlife and bad roads often cause damage to cars also. Considering all these factors, it is important to have a good North Dakota car insurance policy.

Having the coverage when it is needed will save hundreds and even thousands of dollars. In the case of an at-fault accident, having insurance in this state will also prevent losing excessive amounts of money in a lawsuit. Don’t drive without a good North Dakota auto insurance policy. Boyd’s bill to bring about reforms in no-fault insurance

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Jun 22, 2011

Rep. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton has announced the introduction of the new legislation under House Bill 1411. Now there would be several important measures that would be taken by the lawmakers in Florida to fight the menace of auto insurance scams. There would be increased consumer protection, stiffer penalties, and revisions to car crash reports.

The bill has been sponsored by Jim Boyd and it aims to bring about reforms to the PIP insurance which is also known as the No-Fault insurance in Florida. The no-fault protection has been one of the main reasons for the staged accidents that are so common now.

Boyd stated that the PIP coverage has become the prime target for over $1 billion due to fraud operations that took place in a number of ways. Hence, he feels that this bill would help in curtailing fraud.

The modus operandi is the same with these fraud rings. There is a ring which involves attorneys, unscrupulous clinics, and the fraudsters. They are all part of these staged accidents, which is followed by a police investigation report. After a few days, the so-called passengers who are supposedly injured in the scam file for injury claims and then look forward to collecting money from the PIP insurance cover. There are even phantom passengers most of the time.

Alden Weichel, president, Bradenton Insurance states that it is an extremely complex situation and hopes that the bill will bring in sufficient reforms. Although, it is a well-known fact that these fraudsters will find ways and means to work around it, he is hopeful of at least having a better hold on the situation.

According to the PIP coverage a sum of $10,000 is provided per accident on the medical bills irrespective of who is at fault. Hence, there are a slew of accidents that are staged as it is an easy way to make a quick buck from the insurance companies.

At the moment, Florida ranks number one in the entire nation when it comes to auto insurance fraud, as per reports from the Division of Insurance Fraud.

There were over 3,000 staged accidents during 2007 – 2009 that were reported in the State of Florida alone.

Bob Fowinkle, President of Moore has stated that this is a very bad problem and that the law needs to be tightened. The HB 1411 hopes to address these issues by bringing about some reforms that will help in curbing auto insurance fraud.
