Young drivers inseparable from smartphones

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Oct 31, 2011

Department for Transport proposals for increasing the speed limit on motorways to 80mph in recognition of improved vehicle technology should also take account of new figures on in-car distractions, as set out in the RACs 2011 Report on Motoring.

According to the RAC, the problem of smartphone use amongst drivers aged 18 to 24 years has reached staggering new levels, with music, email and mapping apps the main distractions.

Almost half of the young drivers questioned admitted using their mobile while driving in the past year, with the most common need for music (24%), followed by emails (23%) and Google maps (22%).

A further 15% said they talk to friends using Blackberry Messenger or similar services, whilst behind the wheel.

Fifteen percent tweet when on the road, while 8% even admitted to playing games on their smartphones.

Texting is also a growing problem, with over 20% of young drivers admitting to texting while driving in the 2011 survey, compared with 14% in 2010.

Yet drivers overwhelmingly agree that using a phone behind the wheel is dangerous (82%), and one quarter of drivers questioned consider mobile phone usage a bigger issue than drink driving.

Motorists also have strong opinions on how to tackle in-car phone usage, with only 10% believing the current system of punishment works well.

Two-thirds of respondents want to see a ‘3 strikes’ rule whereby drivers caught using their phone three times would lose their licence for a year.

RAC motoring strategist, Adrian Tink, comments: “The popularity of smartphones and apps, especially among younger drivers who’ve grown up with the technology, risks creating a new generation of drivers who believe using a phone behind the wheel is acceptable. This has to change.

He adds: “At 70mph your car travels around the length of six double decker busses every two seconds – if someone told you to close your eyes at that speed for that length of time you’d think they were crazy – yet people are doing virtually the same thing by taking their eyes of the road to look at phones.

Mr Tink also notes that while a quarter of motorists now believe mobile phone use behind the wheel is on a par with drink-driving, the offence still lacks the taboo of drink-driving.

Wisconsinites Finding Cheap Car Insurance Now

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Oct 28, 2011

Drivers in Wisconsin can get excited about spending less on their car insurance premiums very soon.  Back in 2010, Democrats in Wisconsin basically doubled the minimum coverage requirements in the state.  But Republicans, who took control early this year, decided that premiums were getting too high and insurance companies costs were increasing too dramatically.  This information comes from Wisconsin Auto Insurance Changes Set to Take Effect Nov. 1, by Gregor McGavin of Online Auto Insurance.

Many of the minimum coverage requirements in Wisconsin will be cut in half and some will be cut even farther.  Currently Wisconsin drivers have to carry 50/100/15 coverage, or $50,000 of bodily injury coverage for one person, $100,000 per accident, and $15,000 of property damage.  Those levels will decrease to 25/50/10, making finding cheap car insurance in Wisconsin much easier.  High estimates said that premiums went up as much as 30% with the increased requirements.

There is a debate in the state over whether these cuts were necessary though.  Supporters of decreasing the coverage requirements say that insurers costs will go down, causing premiums to go down, and giving more people the ability to purchase car insurance.  Some critics say that Wisconsin consumers will be hurt because increasing health care costs have brought about a need for increasing coverage of medical related car insurance.  The decrease will happen in a few weeks and we will see what happens as Wisconsin goes from some of the highest minimums to some of the lowest.

III provides business insurance tips for those affected by Hurricane Irene

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Oct 27, 2011

Many homes and businesses alike suffered damage at the hands of Hurricane Irene. As business owners consider the insurance implication of damages inflicted by Hurrican Irene, the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) recently offered up tips to make the claims process go more smoothly.

According to the I.I.I., standard business insurance policies provide coverage that protects business owners from wind damage inflicted on business property as a result of a hurricane.

In addition, a typical business insurance policy will cover not only the main physical structure of the business, but will also cover office furnishings, inventory, computers and other items vital to business operations, the I.I.I. said.

Flood damage, however, even if it is a result of a storm surge caused by a hurricane is typically excluded from standard business insurance policies, much as flood damage is excluded from home insurance coverage, as well. For protection against floods, business owner must obtain coverage from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

Business interruption insurance can help to cover the loss of income from a hurricane if the damages result in a work stoppage. According to the I.I.I., “coverage for business income generally begins 72 hours after the time that the premises suffered the physical loss and ends when either the property is repaired or replaced.”

As with most insurance claims, time is of the essence.

“Business owners who have suffered losses need to contact their insurance company or agent as soon as possible to start the claims filing process,” Loretta Worters, vice president with the I.I.I, said in a statement.

The I.I.I. offered up a list of tips for business owners who will be submitting claims as a result of Hurricane Irene:

  • Make temporary repairs, if possible, to avoid further damage and increase safety
  • Prepare a detailed inventory of damaged property
  • If possible, have visual documentation of damages
  • Collect all documentation possible, including canceled checks, receipts and invoices

Oct 30, Can they repair my dads truck he has full coverage?

Posted by Dustin Reed \\ Oct 24, 2011

My dad went to my house and I borrowed his truck to buy something to eat on my way back I got in an accident the police found me at fault.

My dad?s truck has full coverage which is collision and comprehensive and liability. The thing is that im not on his policy and I have a valid driver?s license.

Can the insurance company fix my dads truck? He has acceptance insurance. The company doesn?t want to fix it. what can we do? I didn?t hit the car the car hit me but they gave me a ticket for change of lane violation

Answer:

Hello,

Why is that they are not covering the loss? I mean the specifics. They have to have a reason to decline coverage. They can?t simply say we will not pay.

There is an exclusion regarding this type of situation that is somewhat general. It states that if you use the vehicle for regular use and are not listed as a driver, then the loss will not be covered. Why were you driving the vehicle? For how long? Have you done this before, if so how often.

All of these are questions that you will have to answer. Coverage could be excluded from the policy.

Always talk to an attorney.

Good Luck

Homeowners Insurance: Someone Gets Hurt On Your Property

Posted by Dustin Reed \\ Oct 20, 2011

One of the reasons you have homeowners insurance is to avoid paying out of pocket for extensive property damage. Another reason you’re paying for homeowners insurance is to have an attorney on retainer to defend you should you be sued if someone gets hurt on your property.

I would like to share a story about how a client dealt with fraud related to a customer claiming she was injured at the client’s shop. This is one of my business clients, but my homeowners insurance clients could learn a lesson from how she handled the situation.

A tale of a fraudulent claim

My client owns a beautiful gift shop. She had a customer who came into her store and was looking around briefly, then left. Moments later, this customer came back into the store and told my client she had tripped on a loose garden hose on the steps outside the store.

My client, a very smart, savvy person, first inquired what injuries were sustained and if immediate medical attention was warranted. She because suspicious with the answers she was getting and decided to do a little investigating.

Luckily there was a painter working outside of the store who said the only thing he witnessed was the woman exclaiming, “I’ve just fallen!” The painter said he then saw her go to the nail salon across the street after leaving the store. My client asked the painter to provide a statement.

My client then asked about the woman’s behavior at the nail salon. The employees there said the woman did not look injured and their cameras could show her behavior after the alleged fall.

This potentially costly insurance claim had a happy ending for my client; she presented her research to the woman who was claiming injury, and that woman was never heard from again. My belief is that my client did enough research to prove to the other woman that any claim would be scrutinized.

What to do if someone is injured on your property

When someone is injured on your property, whether it is due to a rug, loose steps, cracks on the sidewalk, or nasty weather conditions, you are obligated to address the injury and possible insurance claim right away.

If someone is injured at your home or business, it can be a delicate situation. I think my client handled her situation very well. First, you need to assess the extent of the injuries and determine if emergency care should be dispatched. If not, and depending on your relationship with the injured person, you should consider contacting the police so both parties can make statements.

If possible, photos should be taken of the injuries. You should also take pictures of the area where the injury occurred to show the condition of the property.

If the injured party is merely looking for reimbursement of medical costs, it could be a far better scenario than if the injured party decides to sue you or claim damages beyond what your insurance policy covers.

As always, call your insurance agent to discuss the situation and get guidance on how to handle it. An agent can help you much better if he or she knows about any injuries or potential claims right when they happen.

IAB Brothers Console, Consult & Rebuild East Coast

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Oct 13, 2011

When natural disasters strike, the power team behind IAB treats clients like one of their own.

Jim McCaffrey had spent 18 years building his Yardley supermarket, McCaffrey’s, into an area institution. Offering gourmet and organic items long before it was expected, the store was well liked by the community and, in turn, usually quite busy. Such was the case the afternoon of February 28, 2004, when shoppers headed in for weekend supplies were instead faced with a devastating fire.

Ripping through the building and eventually causing over $15 million in damage, the flames were more than a surprise to the owner. They were a life-changer.

“The details that are involved in something like [a fire] – was beyond overwhelming…I would have had to hire an entire staff to just document what we lost,” he says, adding it was a highly emotional time for himself, his family and his employees. But instead of hiring that team of hundreds, McCaffrey was quickly advised by his attorney to hire a public adjuster.

McCaffrey soon found a match in Ira Straff of Insurance Adjustment Bureau, Inc. (“IAB”), in Bala Cynwyd, PA. “He was introduced to me through a mutual friend, and the relationship was unbelievable,” recalls McCaffrey. “I can best describe it by saying when you hire Ira, you feel like you get a lawyer, an accountant, an insurance expert, and a friend all rolled into one.”

Many don’t know exactly what a public adjuster does, and others may have heard about the sometimes negative connotation bestowed upon the field by insurance companies. The role is quite simple: with their understanding of both the insurance process and disaster relief in general, they assist people and businesses with claims – both large and small – after losses such as fire, flood or other disaster.

“For me, it was absolutely the right move,” says McCaffrey. “You are very emotional at the time, and you need someone with their feet pinned to the ground to help you through the situations. And even though I’ve been in business a long time, [insurance] is uncharted territory and you need someone on your side that knows the right moves.”

IAB opened up shop back in 1964 when Ira’s father discovered what public insurance adjusters do, and the key role they play in helping businesses and individuals settle insurance claims. Working as an electrical contractor in construction, Ira’s father took a job on a fire renovation project and was introduced to the adjusters working for the owner. With his strong background and extensive field experience, he was offered a job, and eventually went into business for himself with his oldest son, Ira.
