The new and improved Embrace Wellness Rewards program

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Aug 16, 2010

Since introducing the Embrace Wellness Rewards program in 2009, we’ve been loving the attention our Embraced pet parents have been giving it. Many people love the program and have given us lots of feedback on how to improve it, particularly increasing the limit and giving us a laundry list of items to add to it.

So, as part of our recent insurance product changes, we took the opportunity to make a few changes to the Wellness program as follows:

  • we have added nail trimming, anal gland expression, gastropexy, and umbilical hernia repair to the Wellness Rewards plan
  • we moved the dental cleanings out of the Wellness Rewards coverage into the new Dental Rewards coverage so the dental illness prevention and coverage were in one place (just like human dental coverage) – more details in a post coming later this week
  • in addition to the $200 Wellness Rewards coverage level, we now have Wellness Rewards Plus with a $400 limit. This will help those pet parents who live in an area with high veterinary costs (like NY and LA) or those with a lot of routine visits to the vet
    • Rewards Plus covers the same as the basic Wellness Rewards coverage but with a higher limit and also adds prescription diet food and OFA and PennHIP examinations.
  • for costs, see the flyer below

 I think most people are going to find something here to please their budget.

Which caravan insurance is suitable?

Posted by Dustin Reed \\ Aug 15, 2010

Trying to decide which caravan insurance is suitable for you may not always be that easy.

The generics

A typical caravan insurance policy consists of four main components:

  • the cover it provides (and by definition, the cover it doesn’t provide);
  • the premium it charges;
  • its conditions, terms and exclusions;
  • its flexibility in terms of being able to offer you customisation – i.e. things you can do to reduce the price through discounts etc.

To really understand which caravan insurance may be suitable, it’s necessary to grasp all of these components as the insurance provider describes them.

Insurance products

A caravan insurance policy is typically tailored for a given type of caravan, be it a static, tourer, motorhome or trailer-tent etc.

Many policies are today sold online through specialist caravan insurance providers.

Their sites typically give an overview of the product and also a detailed description, which covers many of the points outlined above.

If, for example, you’re wondering what discounts may be available for members of a caravan club, it will typically be outlined in the policy detail description.

It may be important to study such opportunities closely because you may be able to reduce the headline cost figure by taking advantage of such things.

Balancing cost versus cover

Although this may sound relatively easy, a little preparatory work may make it even more so.

For example, some policies may have a range of options relating to taking your caravan overseas on holiday. It may be difficult to balance those options off against the overall premium unless you have a fairly good idea of:

  • whether or not you’re planning to take the caravan overseas in the next year;
  • if yes, how many times and for how long;
  • your anticipated mileage outside of the UK;
  • where you are going to (e.g. EU or non-EU etc).

All these things may make a considerable difference to the suitability or otherwise of a policy.

Taking your time

Taking your time to decide which caravan insurance is right for you may prove very sensible in the longer term!

7 Key Tips to Make More Money in Commission Sales

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Aug 15, 2010

At American Income Life Insurance Company, we know how hard you must work and what obstacles you must overcome to capitalize on “Opportunity Unlimited” and enjoy its success. From my perspective, the key is dedication. Because our Agencies do not force a salary, Agents, Managers, and State General Agents alike must “bring it” every day to make a living.

Commission Sales

While those on commission do have increased opportunity at achieving financial prosperity, there are also no guarantees.

Then again, you must be on a commission-paid compensation system in order to capitalize the true financial prosperity you desire. Those who are paid salary or hourly have different goals and ambitions than those who are motivated by money, like us. To us, it would be demotivating to report to work on Monday already knowing how much your paycheck would be on Friday. Commission-based earnings are the unlimited opportunity to bring you financial freedom.

And that’s the heart of the challenge.

Each day is an opportunity to reach a new summit of your Opportunity Unlimited. Want to “bring it” every day? Consider a few things that can help you sort what’s important, increase your productivity, and clear your mind.

1. Manage your time effectively. Remember, it’s your time. You have a mission. As a personal producer at AIL/NILICO, your three primary fundamentals are appointment setting, presentations, and business conservation. If you’re not performing one of those three tasks, the odds at achieving your desired financial prosperity diminish. Review the task at hand, and see if what you’re doing fits into one of those three fundamental categories. If it doesn’t, end it.

2. Accept what you cannot change. I’m sure you’ve read this many times before. It’s very true. If you can’t change what you don’t like, why spend the time and energy trying?

3. Know your limitations. Know the limitations of helping others. Our Company fosters a helping environment, but many of us help by giving, sometimes because we have an inability to say no. While we want to help everyone, it is important to learn to be assertive and say no without upsetting or offending.

4. Find out what causes you stress. If you look at what specifically interferes with productivity, you will learn to avoid those scenarios. Certainly, stress is an obstacle. Normally, stress is caused by too many things to do with too little time to perform them. In this case, it’s not the act as much as the lack of time frame. Consider getting up earlier instead of staying up later; prioritize what’s important, and do not allow outside influences to get in your way.

5. Adopt a healthier lifestyle. I recently started going to the gym regularly. I hadn’t gone to the gym since I stopped coaching high school basketball almost 15 years ago. After five months, while the effects may not be visual (LOL), they certainly are mental. The feeling I have of putting time into myself daily makes me feel good and enables productivity.

6. Try to see things differently. If something is bothering you, make an honest attempt to see things in a new light. Involving someone else from the outside can help give you a fresh perspective. Many times you have a concept of the solution, but collaboration permits beneficial exchanges to your own outlook.

7. Gauge Relativity. I’ve known people who seem to have an internal “stress cylinder” that is constantly filled. These people always have something to worry about. Throughout the day, more stuff gets thrown in the cylinder, and it automatically gets sorted from the least stressful to the most stressful. For example, say your car battery is no good. Your tires also need a little air. Of course, the tires are not the priority; instead, the focus is fixing the battery and getting the car to start. The battery situation is a stressful hassle and ranks at the top of the “stress cylinder”. So you get it charged, and get it out of the “stress cylinder”. Immediately, the lack of air in the tires floats to the top . . . and its level of stress rises to where the battery situation was . . . because the battery situation no longer exists – a vicious cycle of one stressful incident replacing another. Keep what’s important in perspective. It’s just air. If it wasn’t stressful before the battery was fixed, it shouldn’t be now.

These are just a few things to help you organize your pursuit of Opportunity Unlimited. The possibilities to improve what you do every day are endless. You have a tough job. It’s not easy . . . and it’s not supposed to be. Clearing your mind and reorganizing your approach will help you become more productive and find success.

Today’s News: Digital Medical Records on 5-Year Deadline, AG Probes Life Insurance Industry and Policyholders Choose Not to Sue Auto Insurance Companies

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Aug 14, 2010

The Obama administration has given the medical world five years to figure out how to move all medical records to a digital format, the New York attorney general is pushing for a probe into the life insurance industry and individuals recently surveyed revealed that if given the opportunity, they would not be interested in suing their auto insurance companies.

Digital Medical Records Get 5-Year Deadline

In mid-July, President Barack Obama dished out an ambitious five-year plan that would require doctors and hospitals to move all medical records to a digital format. This, according to his administration, would offer greater safety for patients, as well as lower costs for health care and health insurance.

As soon as 2011, the medical world will have access to federal money that could use to help lower the costs of the systems, as well as train workers for their use. Those who don’t comply with these guidelines by 2015 will face Medicare payment cuts (MSNBC).

AG Probes Life Insurance Industry

New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, recently stated he plans to open a fraud investigation into how life insurance companies pay out benefits after their policyholders die. Cuomo said that he believes some insurers are retaining life insurance beneficiaries’ funds in company-controlled accounts, rather than paying out lump sums because they earn higher rates of interest by holding on to the money. So far, his office has already subpoenaed Prudential Financial, Inc. and MetLife, Inc. in hopes of learning more about their use of life insurance policies (Associated Press).

Policyholders Choose Not to Sue Auto Insurance Companies

A new survey released by the Insurance Research Council (IRC) revealed that most Americans don’t believe that adopting new laws allowing people to sue their own auto insurance company for punitive damages is a good idea. The law relates to a first-party bad-faith lawsuit that allows one person to sue their own insurance company because they feel that the company acted in “bad faith” in the settlement of their claim.

So far, only a few states allow policyholders to sue their companies for this reason. However, according to the survey, 57 percent of respondents think the ability to do this is either a poor or only fair idea (PR Web).

How to Understand Car Insurance Groups

Posted by Dustin Reed \\ Aug 13, 2010

    The Process

  1. Step 1

    Check out your UK car insurance group online to help you understand car insurance groups. See the resources section for the link to the Motor Repair Research Centre (Thatcham).

  2. Step 2

    Enter a search term in one of the boxes on the right side of the webpage to access car insurance groups in the UK. There are 10 choices: the more details you enter, the more refined the search will be. For example, if you only know the manufacturer, you will get a substantial list of cars making it more difficult to understand and find your car insurance group. However, if you enter the manufacturer, the year it was made, number of doors, and fuel type it will be easier to find your exact model.

  3. Step 3

    Click “Submit.” You will instantly get a list of all cars fitting the details you entered. The more details you entered on the first screen, the shorter the list. The list contains 14 columns and defines each car, helping you get an understanding of car insurance groups in the UK.

  4. Step 4

    Scroll through the list to select a car. If you can’t find your car click the “back” button and enter another search. The list is based upon car model, year, series, CC, fuel type, gear box, number of doors and body type.

  5. Step 5

    Check column 11 and 12. These two columns tell you the car insurance group. You can change the order from highest to lowest by clicking at the top of the appropriate column. This lets you see cars with the lowest insurance group up to the highest, together with all the associated information, and makes it easy to understand car insurance groups.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat the process with other cars you may be interested in to get comparisons between insurance groups. It will help you understand the groups and may save you money on your car insurance.

Guest post: number one pet health problem is obesity

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \\ Aug 12, 2010

Today, we have a guest post from Dr. Rex Riggs, owner of Best Friends Veterinary Hospital in Powell, Ohio. He is a veterinarian, and an Advisory Board member of Embrace Pet Insurance. Dr. Riggs writes about obesity issues from a small animal practioner’s perspective.
______________________________________________________________

If you were to ask me what is the number one pet health problem I see in my practice, I would have to say obesity.

It is estimated that 35% of adults pets are overweight and up to 50% of the ones over 7 years of age. I would personally say these are conservative figures. I see so many overweight animals.

I think one of the problems is that the owners really do not view their pets as obese. If you think about it, dogs and cats spend at least 70% of their time laying down and doing nothing. I feel it is the vet’s jobs to educate the client on the dangers of obesity and just how deleterious it is on the pet’s lives.

DID YOU KNOW: a lean animal can live up to 30% longer with much less problems than an overweight animal? Multiple studies have shown that lean pets have up to 50% less orthopedic problems. Hip dysplasia is greatly reduced. One injury that is much more prevalent in fatter dogs is cranial cruciate rupture, the ligament in the knee. If you have an overweight Golden Retriever, chances are you will be paying $2500 to $3500 to repair at least one of the cruciate ligaments in the near future.

Obesity causes so many problems in our pets. Diabetes, especially in cats, is directly related to obesity. If your animal gets diabetes, that means often you need to catch your cat/dog twice daily to give insulin shots and then do regular vet check ups to make sure everything is in good control. It is much easier to prevent.

So what can we do to prevent it?

The most important thing is to educate yourself on the foods you are feeding our pets. You need to understand that the pet food industry is estimated to be a $9 to 10 billion dollar industry – everyone is trying to get you to feed their foods, and lots of them.

TIP: Learn to read the labels and really see what is in the food and also the calorie content. Calories per cup can vary by 300% from food to food, so feeding two cups of one food compared to another can be a huge difference. Get in the habit of actually measuring out how much you give.

TIP: My suggestion is to feed ¾ of the amount that is recommended on the bag. If you feed the amount stated, it is a good bet you animal will become overweight.

Then there are the treats. Everyone wants to feed treats, and that is a problem. What might look to us to be a tiny portion is often a large % of the dog’s daily calorie need.

DID YOU KNOW: if you feed a small oatmeal cookie to a 20lb dog that is equivalent to us eating a cheeseburger? One ounce of cheddar cheese would be the same as us downing 2 and ½ hamburgers.

Commercial treats are no better.

DID YOU KNOW: one large original Busy Bone is 732 calories!!

The manufactures try to make the treats to resemble foods we like, such as bacon, beef or even pork chops.

TIP: if a treat looks good enough for you to eat… don’t give it to your dog. Try to use healthy treats such as green beans, cauliflower, cucumbers or rice cakes.

You really can give your pet live a longer happier life by paying attention to what and how much you are feeding them.

Today’s News: Nonprofit Health Insurers Hoard Cash, State Farm Sheds Home Insurance Customers and Ohio Auto Insurance Stays the Same for 40 Years

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Aug 11, 2010

Reports show that many nonprofit health insurers have been hoarding cash, State Farm Insurance plans to drop home insurance customers and liability auto insurance in the state of Ohio has remained unchanged for 40 years.

Nonprofit Health Insurers Hoard Billions in Cash

According to a new study from the independent group, Consumer Union, many nonprofit Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance companies have hoarded $9.1 billion dollars (or $855 per member per year) in extra cash over the last decade. What’s worse, the companies have held on to this money even after proposing double-digit premium rate hikes.

Seven out of 10 nonprofit Blue Cross Blue Shield companies held at least three times the amount that regulators required of them to maintain minimal solvency. With these reserves held, staff attorney from Consumer Union said the nonprofit should be able to reduce prices for consumers (Wall Street Journal).

State Farm Sheds 125,000 Home Insurance Customers

Recently, State Farm announced that it would be shedding 125,000 Florida home insurance customers due to the increased risk of hurricane damage in the state. This news comes only weeks after the company announced that it would be dropping its flood insurance customers nationwide and leaving the National Flood Insurance Program.

What’s unfortunate for the disbanded customers is that their home insurance options are not plentiful with other companies, and many of those who are offering don’t have the same financial backing as State Farm, therefore resulting in them charging more (Naples News).

Ohio Auto Insurance Unchanged for 40 Years

The lucky residents of Ohio have benefited from minimum liability auto insurance limits that haven’t changed since 1970. However, according to the Daytona Daily News, the low minimum limits have not been totally beneficial as they have created gaps between coverage payout and repair costs.

Why such a big gap? Because in 1969, a V-6 Chevy Impala four-door sedan sold for $2,894 while they currently sell for $24,290. With the cost of the car (and hence the cost to repair the car) being significantly higher, the coverage costs would need to increase above the current minimums of $12,500 one bodily injury/$25,000 all injuries/$7,500 property to be useful (Daytona Daily News).

Today’s News: Health Care Overhaul Receives High Marks, Louisianans Don’t Fully Understand Flood Insurance and Young Drivers Make Insurance Claims Most

Posted by Kristin Collins \\ Aug 06, 2010

The health care overhaul has received some high marks from a surprising party, a study found that Louisiana residents don’t fully understand home insurance and new data has revealed that young drivers have the highest frequency of claims.

Health Care Overhaul Receives High Marks

Democrats and even some Republicans have given President Barack Obama high marks for the way his been able to carry out the new health care law. A new poll suggests that many people are very pleased with the way he’s pushed for health insurance and executed it, especially within the law’s first 100 days of being signed. Since May, favorable reviews have increased; however, since there are still months and years to go, views could change. Most say the November elections will be the real indicator of how the masses feel (NY Times).

Louisianans Don’t Fully Understand Flood Insurance

The Insurance Information Institute recently released a study revealing that people in Louisiana — homeowners in the epicenter of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction — are less likely than others around the country to understand that a home insurance policy doesn’t cover flooding. Specifically, 16 percent of Louisiana homeowners mistakenly believe that a homeowners policy covers flooding, having no idea that a flood insurance policy from the National Flood Insurance Program is how floods are covered (NOLA).

Young Drivers Make Insurance Claims Most

A report from the Highway Loss Data Institute revealed that drivers ages 16-19 have the highest frequency of auto insurance claims, as well as the highest average loss per claim. The types of claims this age group has the highest claims for include collision, property damage liability and bodily injury coverage. On the other end of the spectrum are 30-59 year olds who have three times fewer average claims than the teenage group. However, the drivers with the fewest auto insurance claims, according to the study, are those over the age of 70 due to their increased concern about their own driving skills (Auto Quote Now).
