How to Renew Your Auto Insurance

  • Step 1

Obtain your current auto policy and look at the main declarations page. It will contain coverage deductible and policy cost. Coverage dictates what are the maximum costs that the insurance company will cover whereas the deductible shows how much money you would have to pay out of pocket should you incur the loss covered in the policy.

  • Step 2

If you are financing your car there are likely strict guidelines in how your car is being financed. Call your financing company and go through your policy page with them – you don’t have to be an insurance expert, simply recite back your coverage limits and ask if you are adequately covered and what is the “lowest” you can go.

  • Step 3

Determine how much of a coverage you are comfortable with using the financing company’s guidelines as the “cap” of how low you can go. The lower your coverage the cheaper your policy – but only go as low as you are comfortable with.

  • Step 4

Be sure to have all relevant discount information at hand, this includes multiple policy discounts (do you have a house you would like to insure with your car? Rental insurance?), defensive driving discounts (online defensive driving courses are easy to register and complete and can give you discounts for many years), etc.

  • Step 5

Start comparison shopping by calling many different companies, do not be afraid to negotiate over the phone and cite all of your discounts back, you may even bring up their competitor’s price to see if they can price match the quote.
