Supporting BYOD Becoming Standard

Posted by Amanda Mitchell \ Feb 13, 2020

Supporting bring-your-own-device is rapidly becoming a standard cost of doing business for insurers, according to a new report from Novarica. Two-thirds of the 86 mid-size and large P&C and life/annuity insurers surveyed plan to expand their use of BYOD for smartphones and tablets in 2013. And, tablets, according to the report—“Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at US Insurers”—are starting to overtake BYOD for smartphones.

But, just what capabilities are insurers offering on these devices? More than half of the mid-size insurers and more than a third of the large insurers currently make enterprise applications beyond just e-mail/calendaring available to at least some employees on personal tablets. Novarica point out that universal BYOD may never be absolutely necessary from a productivity point of view, but insurers may want to consider employee satisfaction as part of their planning and analysis.

With all of this usage comes plenty of challenges, including that of security, which are noted in the report. And, No

The Ultimate Guide To Illinois Car Insurance

Posted by Dustin Reed \ Feb 10, 2020

If you’ve just moved to the Prairie State, you’re probably worried that the DMV there will be like the DMV everywhere else. But don’t worry. We’ve got a simple guide for you that tells you everything you need to know about getting your car insured in Illinois.

Auto Insurance Requirements
Let’s start with the basics: Everyone in the state needs to be insured under Illinois law. You can’t post a surety bond or pay an uninsured vehicle fee like in some other states, although Illinois has a way for any driver to get insurance that we’ll get to in a little bit. Any insurance on your car must meet the following requirements:

– $20,000 in coverage against bodily injury or death of one person in an accident.

– $40,000 in coverage against bodily injury or death of two people in an accident.

– $15,000 in coverage against injury or property damage in one accident.

– $20,000 per person coverage against uninsured motorist-inflicted bodily injury, which will cover you against injury from either drivers who are uninsured, or drivers who commit a hit and run.

Sheffield landlords under increased scrutiny

Posted by Dave Kartly \ Feb 10, 2020

Private landlords renting properties in Sheffield are being encouraged to bring their portfolios up to scratch by the local council.

Sheffield Council believes that some of the privately-owned accommodation lags behind the quality of council housing, which is currently undergoing a £700 million revamp in a bid to make it more appealing to tenants.

Sheffield Council leader Councillor Julie Dore told The Sheffield Star: “I would like private-rented housing to have tighter regulation but legislation is something we have no control over.

“What we are proposing is to set up a responsible landlord accreditation scheme.”

The improvement of properties on the rental market in the steel city was highlighted in a recent Fairness Commission report, which has the aim of trying to close the gap in the quality of life between those who live in the affluent areas of the city and those who reside in poor areas.

Ajay Jagota of KIS Lettings recently said landlords should regularly inspect the houses and flats in their portfolio to avoid them falling into a state of disrepair during a tenancy.

Reaching the Happy Medium on Mobile Devices

Posted by Kristin Collins \ Feb 08, 2020

One problem Americans have with technology is they can’t decide whether they want things bigger or smaller, particularly when dealing with their mobile devices. Tablets have become smaller while smartphones are promoting larger screens. The one thing they do have in common is this nation’s never-ending battle against obesity—we like our devices skinny. We will never be satisfied until we have paper-thin tablets and smartphones.

In the course of my interview this week with Matt Josefowicz, partner and managing director for Novarica, on the use of mobile devices in insurance, I asked him if we were ever going to reach a happy medium on the size of our mobile devices and reach the point where consumers could get by with just a single device.

Josefowicz declined to speculate on whether we would one day reach that point, but he did have an interesting opinion: Don’t bet against changes in technology.

“When the original tablet came out people said it wouldn’t replace their cellphone or their laptop, so why would they even want such a new device,” says Josefowicz. “The growth r

The 5 Greatest Automotive Super Bowl Ads of the Last 5 Years

Posted by Dustin Reed \ Feb 07, 2020

To celebrate this year’s Super Bowl Ad-pocalypse, we compiled a list of the greatest automotive Super Bowl ads in recent history (and included them below).

As always, this year’s Super Bowl was peppered with what are sure to be some of the best ads of the year. Of course, the chatter around our watercooler this morning mostly revolved around car-related ads. And admittedly, there’s a little debate going on about how they compare with some of the classic Super Bowl car ads. To gain some perspective, I took a stroll down memory lane to rediscover the best Super Bowl commercials in recent history (featuring cars, of course).

Feel I’ve done a particular ad a great injustice by leaving it out? Link to it in a comment and let me know!

Let’s start with Volkswagen’s 2011 “Darth Vader” spot. This is probably the most popular automobile-related Super Bowl commercial of all time — and for good reason. Though you never

Guns vs Cars: What Kills More?

Posted by Dustin Reed \ Feb 03, 2020

By Aaron Crowe

For something that wasn’t designed to kill, a car is more likely to kill you than a gun.

Motor vehicle traffic deaths killed 33,687 in 2010, more than the 31,672 firearm deaths that year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers are close, equating to 10.9 deaths from car accidents and 10.3 from guns per 100,000 people.

That’s a lot of non-medical deaths that get both sides of the gun debate talking about if guns should be licensed and users tested as much as cars are. There are a lot more controls on who can drive a car and what condition the car is in — from driver’s licenses to insurance and safety requirements — than there are for firearms.

But because guns are less deadly than cars, there’s no need to have mandatory training for guns, the pro-gun argument goes.

Firearm fatalities are projected to exceed traffic fatalities for the first time in 2015, according to a Bloomberg analysis. Based on th
